Traveling through Canada, ex-con Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman) picks up a vivacious young hitchhiker, Vivienne (Emily Hampshire), who needs a ride to her hometown. Soon afterward, the pair are involved in a horrible car accident that kills Vivienne. Alex continues on to her home to tell Vivienne's mother (Sigourney Weaver) about her fate. Later he begins an affair with a neighbor (Carrie-Anne Moss) who paves the way for his healing.

It is a quintessentially Canadian film, both in performance and cinematography so I was pleasantly surprised to see such a stellar cast from a variety of countries and backgrounds in this. Alan Rickman is sublime and Sigourney Weaver delivers a powerful performance as high functioning autistic woman. Dr. Temple Grandin was a consultant on this film, and it shows. Weaver's characterization isn't over the top, but instead offers subtle moments of candour. In one scene she delivers a beautiful soliloquy during a game of scrabble. Lord knows they tried. But if the storyline is implausible, the writing is bad, the characters are undeveloped, and the directing amateurish, then even well-seasoned, skilled performers can't save a train wreck. I finally had to turn it off out of respect for Rickman and the great work he's usually associated with. However, this picture has a good heart at it center, the characters and situations are (mostly) authentic, and the acting is good*. *Ms. Weaver sometimes over-acts, and Mr. Rickman is somewhat flat at times, but this is mostly attributable to the screenplay.
