[It] works more often than not because Nicholson—Jack’s grandson—does what he can with his major and mostly thankless part. Go to Full Review

THE DEPUTY is ostensibly a crime thriller...But Sukkar’s feature directorial debut works best when viewed as a character study wrapped inside the trappings of a genre film...And Duke Nicholson is a revelation. Go to Full Review

The Deputy is slightly better than some of its like-minded contemporaries within the space of routine crime thrillers featuring obvious villains and a criminal conspiracy. Go to Full Review

As messy and flawed as its bungling main character, this "cool kids" collaboration is all the more disappointing because it feels like it could have been the next Fargo. Go to Full Review

The Deputy is a diverting, mildly humorous police thriller whose cast and crew all put in work that is solid and unworthy of criticism, but is also unworthy of particular praise. Go to Full Review

Isn’t a good movie—indeed, it’s kind of a mess—but it’s also rather fun, in a guilty-pleasure sort of way...a slow-moving, convoluted crime yarn streaked with dark humor that holds one’s attention even as it lumbers to a sadly predictable conclusion. Go to Full Review

Marc Z @TKDLife 1 day ago Well Go USA’s new gritty crime film, The Deputy, is a well made, gritty, and, somewhat, comedic crime drama with a noir flare. The film is a tightly made crime drama, which opens with the murder of a criminal with possible cartel signs and it devolves from there based upon a series of odd and quirky circumstances that tie in nicely with the films sensibility about life in a small Southwestern town. The film centers around a hapless and unambitious loser, played adeptly by Jack Nicholson’s grandson, Duke. Duke’s command of the screen is a welcome part of the movie, but should not have surprised me. He does a good job playing the role, and not overplaying it. He is definitely more anti-hero, than hero, and he is fun to route for.The rest of the cast, albeit not having large roles, all do a great job adding color to this film. William H. Macy, Stephen Dorff, and Tiffany Haddish all give memorable performances in this one. The Direction and cinematography are very good. Cinematography is beautiful. The acting is phenomenal. Matt Sukkar has a bright future. Very curious what he does next. See more John C @JohnC213 Oct 10, 2026 Simmering, thoughtful with dynamite character studies, & beautifully shot. Saw a Q&A with the director and some of the actors..., movie made for 1.5 million in 18 days which to me is remarkable. Very well done, satisfying and look forward to more of the very talented Sukkar's work. See more N S @Sugar113 Oct 10, 2026 Superb acting from everyone, story takes a few twists and turns and ends up with a nice catharsis. Noir cinematography beautiful. Color palette really quite nice. Recommended highly. See more Charles T @collingsdh2 Oct 7, 2026 A very dark, funny, fish-out-of-water, slacker comedy that's wrapped in an upside-down take on a police procedural set in a sad, can't get-out-of-here, going nowhere small town. The characters are real, the acting is great. The plot is guessable (as if that matters), but the way it's delivered is full of great twists created by the characters and the pacing. Just might become a cult a classic - favorite line: "Why are you going out again? Every time you go out it only gets worse." Graphic violence warning: yes, there's gunplay and deaths, so don't take the little kids, but I didn't find any of it gratuitous, it just showed the desperate struggle of our fish-out-of water to stay alive.
