Enough with stories where betrayal is disguised as love! It’s really annoying to watch a girl dumping her loving, caring, handsome and wealthy fiancé for a village single father, who is a poor swineherd/builder. Girl literally prefers to drink low quality beer in a shabby tavern with a guy who just came from the stables and smells like pigs rather than enjoy fine dinner in London’s best apartment with an extremely wealthy young and handsome (the most important- loving and loyal) guy who does everything for her. They want us relate to this woman and understand her choice ? But how ?? No it’s not a romantic story ! It’s a story about a girl with victim mentality who feels not worthy of good life and downgrades her lifestyle by going to a small town and imposing herself to strangers. Annoying, I couldn’t finish it

We are expected to cheer for a protagonist who heartlessly abandons her attractive, kind, wealthy, and supportive fiancé for a stranger from a remote island, simply because he's a fellow bookworm. It’s irrational and absurd. If the filmmakers wanted us to cheer for this choice, they should have painted the fiancé as some villainous scoundrel. Instead, he’s decent, and she breaks his heart anyway. I can’t celebrate that. I ended up rooting for the fiancé to find someone who actually loves him without confusion or betrayal. He deserves the happiness she didn’t give.

Really enjoyable historical fiction. Have your Kleenex handy for the emotional second half. Lily James is one of my favorite actors and again she shines in this film. A sad look at the personal trauma inflicted by Germany during WWII + a satisfying romance/happy ending.
