Critics Consensus

The Kissing Booth deploys every rom-com cliché in the book with little care given to achieving any real sentiment.

[Noah and Elle's] relationship quickly spirals into one of those classic toxic relationships that populate Netflix's teen dramas. Go to Full Review

In another film, the sentiment would be a romantic one. In The Kissing Booth, it feels like a cage. Go to Full Review

A refreshing film in its start but whose interest soon decays to end up being a mediocre movie. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The director seemed to have a strange fascination with the lead taking off her shirt and wearing super short skirts, and the camera lingered on her in ways that made me uncomfortable. Go to Full Review

It feels like it was written by someone who simply digested everything she was told "romance" was supposed to be by the patriarchy, and vomited back at us. Nearly every cliché in the film feels cribbed from another movie. Go to Full Review

A smattering of swearing, sexual references and underage drinking means it doesn't patronise its intended audience, and it refreshingly allows the female lead to be the dork, rather than some unobtainable Venus. Go to Full Review

Mariana T @M.Tezeta 2d I don't want to dwell on this, but... it's truly awful. It was all I needed to vent my frustration. The questionable teenagers, the weak script, the clichéd story, the human-pet dialogue (sorry, between Ellie and Noah), the normalized male gaze, and the protagonist's exploration of her own youth. It's all ridiculous. There's no character development; her thinking only worsens the closer she gets to Noah. Why not talk more about self-love before reacting to questionable impulses by justifying them with happiness? The only original thing here is the title, but: too bad, a much dumber story. I really don't know what they're thinking in American schools. Finally, the most reasonable thing I found in the whole film: sometimes we say more coherent things when we're six years old. See more Julia N @Juicyjules 4d A waste of time. It starts off promising, but quickly devolves into a hot steaming pile of trash. 1) Best friend pact was weird and a little too codependent 2) Noah should've been in therapy for the anger 3) Elle was just strange and made questionable decisions, e.g., going on a date with her assaulter 4) Lee's anger and disappointment felt disproportionate to the crime, aka dating his older brother. In conclusion, Jacob saved the day with his face card. #NeverForgetYourOrigins #WeAllHaveToStartSomewhere :) See more Gabby H @HandsOffGabriella Feb 1 It was overall a very poorly written story. It was kinda weird all the acting was lowkey terrible. Sorry I meant highkey. The only good character was Lee. It was reallyyyy cringy and everything g that Noah said sounded like when an author writes " he growled" or " he hissed" also there was no yearning or slow burn or anything I look for in a good plot. There was no redeeming qualities. Besides Lee. No good character developments Noah will probably cheat. All hair looked like wigs. And it romanticizes toxic relationships and sexual harassment. There is profanity of the WORST ACCORDS. Jk jk. Also Noah is not the bad boy he thinks he is. He’s just weird. Also what was that even with the condoms bro 💀💀 also why are there rules for the friendship/all relationships 😭😭😭😭 See more Zachary K @ZacharyKing Dec 3 Surface level attempt at a romcom, very disappointing to those expecting something. 3/10 See more Patricia H. @faithful49erz559 Nov 22 I loved these movies there needs to be a part 4 See more Pauline M Nov 6 I watch romcoms to sleep, since the plot is pretty much always the same. This one kept me awake. Halfway through it I figured it had to be from a fanfic and guess what?? I can't judge the original book since it was literally written by a 15yo, but why adapt this?
