Amir Bar-Lev tells a complex, harrowing and moving story that takes an unflinching look at the industry of extreme mountain climbing and its changing culture. Focusing on a 2021 expedition, this documentary follows Icelander John Snorri Sigurjónsson and the Pakistani father-son team of Ali and Sajid Sadpara, a party of mountaineers who set out to be the first to summit K2 in the winter, when the mountain’s conditions are the cruelest. The men soon find themselves sharing the treacherous ascent with influencer climbers and their film crews, commercial expedition clients, and a Nepalese team no longer content to help Westerners achieve mountaineering glory. “The Last First: Winter K2” takes us to the icy heights and unpredictable weather of K2 and reveals a surprising and layered story — one of strategy and determination, class and caste, money and power — all under life-and-death circumstances.

It is sobering to watch one of the guides climb K2 after the last first expedition, not to set a record but to find his father’s body and bury it there. Go to Full Review

There’s some deeply poignant footage here. Some of it was apparently too intimate to make the final cut. But such personal moments are key to keeping the film moving. Go to Full Review

Amir Bar-Lev’s film means well but struggles to stand out among other extreme mountaineering documentaries. Go to Full Review

In the absence of a more fully formed study...there’s a very clear ceiling to a film like The Last Winter, far below the mountaintop it depicts. Go to Full Review

Emotionally charged and chilling, director Amir Bar-Lev weaves a complex tapestry of ambition, greed, and tragedy within the world of extreme mountaineering. Go to Full Review

It’s more akin to Jon Krakauer’s sobering "Into Thin Air" than an extreme sports documentary, and a story that comes to the troubling conclusion that, even in one of the most remote spots on Earth, human beings can’t escape themselves. Go to Full Review

Blake G @BlindEye 1 day ago The Last First is a first rate mountaineering film that has less to do with mountaineering than what gets into the heads of people who pursue it. This is a classic Bar Lev telling of the story behind the story. The emotional toll on the participants and their families is gripping. My takeaway is an examination of the risks we all take in life as relative. For most of us there’s the inconceivable notion of a climb of this nature, but it’s all relative when you get right down to it. Commuting on the L.I.E. Or hailing a cab or Uber driver of complete unknown origins and skills to ferry you to your next appointment. "Hope he’s a safe driver." Watch the film and then consider your own risk taking keeping in mind that it’s all relative when. Watch the film and then take a moment to consider your own risk taking. See more David M @vicardave Oct 17, 2026 This documentary tells the harrowing story of the chaotic 2021 scramble to be the first to reach the summit of K2 in winter. It's beautifully shot - some of the images are truly breathtaking - and tells a story of negligence, arrogance, and ultimately lethally bad decision-making. The story is complex and not always told with the clarity the subject matter deserves, and could perhaps benefit from a longer stretch to ask hard questions of the people who seem to be responsible. See more David A @RT46928943 Oct 9, 2026 Powerful and tragic See more S P @S1337 Oct 9, 2026 A good documentary about the reality of mountain climbing. It gets harder and harder to watch and the ascent progresses, and we can vicariously project ourselves in the shoes of those who were there. One thing that does not die is the will of man to go forward despite all odds, and that's is the same adventurous spirit that guided the great explorers to who we owe so much at this day and age, and it's a nice hommage to that spirit. Indirecty an ode to mankind's thirst, as well as letting the viewer decide for himself on the level of criticism each one deserves for what he did or did not. Recommended not only for fans of the genre but also those who are looking for their limits. See more Keith K @Peacemaker17 Oct 9, 2026 Best climbing documentary since Meru, hard to call it better since they’re different, but I think it is. I cried See more V Y @Vivivi8 Oct 3, 2026 This is not a documentary. K2 is one of the hardest mountains to climb. Many of those making comments should not be there. Death would be expected. They are lucky if they decide not to do the summit. It is a poor excuse for discrediting other alpinists. Please do better. See more Read all reviews
