Critics Consensus

Meandering character development undercuts The Occupant's exciting premise, though Javier Gutiérrez's exceptional performance makes the proceedings work.

The film waves off character development and merely side-eyes its frustrations with capitalism in its rush to convince us that this dullard is in fact a supervillain Go to Full Review

Javier Gutiérrez knows how to give his character touches of ambiguity and confusion, to generate uncertainty in the viewer. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

The main reason why The Occupant works is Javier Gutierrez's dedicated performance as the psychopathic, dejected advertiser who would go to any heights to get what he wants. Go to Full Review

The film is an ungodly look at the career of older professionals, but isn't particularly creative or shocking. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Gerry D @RT69473588 Oct 10, 2026 I can’t believe i had to watch that. The ending is just something else. I don’t think i will ever watch any suspenseful thrillers after this. See more Marco L @decatur555 Aug 6, 2026 This one entertains. It has a good premise, an uncomfortable atmosphere and a central character who is scary precisely because he doesn't seem a monster, just someone who could exist. The problem is that almost everything works thanks to Javier Gutiérrez. Javier Muñoz, a once successful adman, can't accept losing job, money and status, and clings to his old home. The film makes the obsession gradual: first he watches, then he enters, then he manipulates. Gutiérrez is magnificent, polite, miserable, threatening and pathetic almost within one scene. Mario Casas, however, is weak: serious face, low voice, and the gap with Gutiérrez shows in every shared scene. Bruna Cusí is much better. The first half is the best; later come forced coincidences and a predictable ending. Not as deep as it wants to be, yet tense and entertaining. Gutiérrez walks into that house and takes the whole film with him. See more L. F @RT68678650 Jul 6, 2026 Really wanted to like it to begin with, but found the pacing exceptionally slow and the characters unlikable. Was very bored by half way through. See more Juan Carlos A @Casse Aug 23, 2025 Depressing and weird. I didn't like it at all. Don't waste your money. See more Daniel V @RT92085126 May 21, 2024 Fantastic character study of greed and psychopathy in a capitalistic society. It's a slow burn, but well worth it. See more T T @RT95435478 Mar 8, 2023 The movie started out on a strong footing, but after a short period, it quickly descended into nonsensical chaos. It's full of plot holes that make it frustrating to watch. It's full of very unbelievable and unrealistic developments and has a very dumb ending. See more Read all reviews
