Like the filmmaker’s last work, ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘The Odyssey’ has a downbeat, apocalyptic bent—but, unlike ‘Oppenheimer,’ or any previous Nolan film, the new film is also centrally about what human beings owe one another.

Hoyte van Hoyterna as cinematographer does wonders with the various settings for the film, and Ludwig Goransson’s music is a highlight. You could close your eyes and just listen.

I’m delighted with this rendition of The Odyssey. It’s effortlessly inclusive, it’s a grand, epic story, and it’s also a heartfelt reckoning of humanity facing our own flaws. Yes, the women deserved better, but the performances are excellent.

Objectively, a large-scale filming of (and mass reception to!) The Odyssey, with everything that entails, signifies a sharp repudiation of the current cinema and its overall mass of stupidities.

I left five minutes in because my ears were in pain. I don’t know who set the volume but it felt like they were trying to destroy my hearing. Also AMC theaters waste a half hour of your life before starting your movie. And we wonder why people don’t want to go to the movies anymore.

I enjoyed it, didn’t love it. The music wasn’t memorable (Nolan’s movies usually have amazing scores.) I believe the production of this movie was more impressive than the final product. I wish I could have seen it in Imax.
