Dustin Hoffman plays Michael Dorsey, a gifted but difficult actor who reinvents himself as “Dorothy” to land a role. What starts as a desperate move turns into a journey of self-awareness, empathy, and a whole lot of awkward hilarity. Think Mrs. Doubtfire if Robin Williams forgot he was acting and actually grew as a person. The humor is character-driven, not cheap or repetitive. Hoffman is magnetic, and his scenes with Sydney Pollack (as his fed-up agent) crackle with tension and wit. Bill Murray, playing it low-key, delivers some of the funniest lines without ever raising his voice. The film stumbles a bit with too many romantic angles—Sandy’s character is underwritten, though Teri Garr brings her to life with charm and comic timing. Jessica Lange’s Oscar-winning role feels a bit subdued compared to the rest of the cast. Still, Tootsie shines thanks to its balance of comedy, conflict, and character. Just kitsch now. See more Melissa M 02/17/2025 I know this movie might seem politically incorrect now. But it was a different time back then. I think this movie could be considered a cult classic. It's about a struggling actor trying to make it in the business. Doing whatever it's takes to get by. He's not afraid to take chances. Dude dresses like a lady. But he's left with no choice. It's not from lack of trying. Hollywood can be like a woman. Feisty & To Fickle. Bill Murray, Teri Garr, Dustin Hoffman, Dabney Coleman, & Jessica Lange, Geena Davis give memorable performances. You might even say the storyline has been done before. Of a man dressing up like a woman to find a job in a man's world. But it's never been done better. With the exception of Mrs Doubtfire.
