After building an empire with bootleg alcohol, legendary crime boss Al Capone (Robert De Niro) rules Chicago with an iron fist. Though Prohibition agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) attempts to take Capone down, even his best efforts fail due to widespread corruption within the Windy City's police force. Recruiting an elite group of lawmen who won't be swayed by bribes or fear, including Irish-American cop Jim Malone (Sean Connery), Ness renews his determination to bring Capone to justice.

Slick on the surface but loaded with artful touches, Brian DePalma's classical gangster thriller is a sharp look at period Chicago crime, featuring excellent performances from a top-notch cast.

“The Untouchables” is heavy on the fiction, but thanks in large part to those great Chicago locales, it feels palpable and real. Go to Full Review

To paraphrase William Butler Yeats, the moral, psychological, and emotional center of The Untouchables, like that of all of De Palma’s movies and like that of Reagan’s administration, simply cannot hold. Go to Full Review

The Untouchables is a terrific movie, full of the same brand of fierce vitality that made the 1930s gangster films so compelling. Go to Full Review

It’s one of the great gangster flicks, a gorgeously realized production that places archetypal heroes and villains in the service of a rip-roaring storyline. Go to Full Review

The wonderful cinematography set in 1930s Chicago, combined with the excellent acting of Kevin Costner and Robert De Niro, made it a great watch. However, the story development and the directing in some scenes fell a bit awkward, which broke my immersion at times. Still, it's good enough to experience that classic Prohibition-era vibe. See more Henry D @Henry_Domke Jul 26 We’ve seen The Untouchables at least five times, yet its exceptional craftsmanship still made it a pleasure to watch. That is not true of many films. The direction, cinematography, sets, costumes, music and fine acting all work together beautifully. Lorna summed it up perfectly: "This is a wonderful film. A perfect film. A beautiful thing to behold." See more Eli M @RT96753630 Jul 23 Favorite mob movie OAT See more Itay Z @RT81687486 Jul 21 Too quick, poorly edited, poorly timed soundtrack. Very predicted surprise attempts, Very unconvincing story buildup and seemed like not even trying. Expected so much from this and to my surprise it was a huge disappointment. See more Travis M @TMorg007 Jul 10 Sean Connery is fantastic in just about anything. Robert Deniro on the other hand is basically just the same in every single role he is cast in. Boring and redundant don't ya think? This movie could have been elevated to rewatch status with just a bit more time spent in casting. Kevin Costner does an adequate job, but every time Deniro is onscreen with that irritating voice and arrogant demeanor it reminds me of the last time I watched a movie with the same miserable delivery. The story is fine, the cinematography is fine; just imagine this movie with someone other than Deniro and you can feel what it might have been. Too bad, won't touch this one again. See more Chris B @Papa13070 May 8 "The Untouchables" is in my opinion De Palma's greatest work, with his other masterpiece, namely "Scarface", coming a very close second. In "Scarface" the focus is on a paranoid and self-destructive gangster who rises to meteoric heights and then falls; in "The Untouchables" the focus is on a very honest man with a noble mission, Elliot Ness (Kostner), who is prepared to do anything to clean Chicago from the corruption and mayhem caused by the notorious gangster Al Capone (De Niro). His quest is really tough, as his opponent is determined and powerful, but he has the help of three invaluable partners: Malone (Connery), a no-nonsense experienced cop, Wallace (Martin Smith), an accountant who will try to help bring tax charges against Capone, and Stone (Garcia), a great shooter. The acting is superb, and while Connery was the one who received his well-deserved Oscar, Kostner and De Niro made Oscar-class performances too. See more Read all reviews
