Torin F @nonlinearize Aug 2 THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK is a weird one. The Updike novel on which it's based is described (believe it or not) as pro-feminist, but the film seems anything but. In an inadvertent devil's bargain, three women summon a man of their desire, and then must subdue him once the fun becomes too much. Jack Nicholson steals the screen with a comedic and creepy performance that emphasizes the women's responsibility for all that happens, and their eventual triumph lands them in... domestic roles. Nicholson is having a field day, Cher, Sarandon and Pfeiffer are also good, and there are a handful of witty moments, but overall it's plagued by off pacing, lots of borderline cringe bits, sloppy editing, and unprompted, fuck-ugly visual effects in the otherwise serviceable climax. George Miller embraces the supernatural premise while using it to explore desire, power, and independence, creating a story that's entertaining and refreshingly unpredictable. The gothic production design and imaginative practical effects give the film a distinctive identity. Jack Nicholson is the clear standout, delivering a wonderfully outrageous performance as Daryl Van Horne that effortlessly shifts between charming, hilarious, and unsettling. Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer also share terrific chemistry, making their friendship the emotional foundation that keeps the story grounded. Unfortunately, in the final act, the escalating supernatural spectacle begins to overshadow the characters. Even so, the cast, originality, and unforgettable atmosphere make The Witches of Eastwick an entertaining and unique fantasy comedy. It leaves me wondering: does the devil actually exist, or is he merely a manifestation of the three women’s collective desires? It seems that in this town, whenever any three women gather, their shared thoughts possess a formidable power. The scenes of them playing the cello and dancing in the hall are both eerie and strangely charming. The actresses are absolutely fabulous, especially with those iconic, colorful 'perm' hairstyles. What I found puzzling, however, was their choice to give birth to the babies even after realizing what kind of creature the father was. They couldn't even bring themselves to hurt the devil—only to scare him away. They are truly far too kind. See more Read all reviews
